Gracewell CMA Named Caregiver of the Year by LeadingAge Iowa

Gracewell is proud to announce that Ramona Chajon, Certified Medication Aide (CMA), has been named the recipient of the distinguished Caregiver of the Year Award by LeadingAge Iowa. The surprise recognition was recently shared with Mona at Gracewell, and she will formally accept the award at the Leading Age Iowa’s upcoming Spring Conference.

Ramona is widely recognized by residents, families, and coworkers for her exceptional dedication, compassion, and professionalism. Since joining Gracewell in 2021 as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), she has consistently gone above and beyond in delivering high-quality, resident-centered care.

Known for her reliability, Ramona has maintained perfect attendance throughout her tenure and routinely works beyond her scheduled hours—averaging 48 hours per week—to ensure residents receive consistent, attentive care. She frequently steps in to cover additional shifts, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to both her team and those she serves.

Professional Growth and Resident Impact

In 2024, Ramona advanced to the role of Certified Medication Aide, where she quickly distinguished herself through her mastery of the electronic medical record system and her precise, accountable approach to medication administration. Her ability to seamlessly transition between CNA and CMA responsibilities, including caring for residents in the dementia household, earned her a coveted premium resource position—an honor reserved for only a select group of team members.

Ramona’s impact is perhaps best reflected in the words of those she cares for:

“We appreciate all the love and extra care provided and enjoy our time with her. I hope she always remembers how special she is!” said resident Hilda.

Another resident, Sara, shared, “She takes her time with me and is very attentive to my needs. It is clear she is knowledgeable and always willing to look further into things to answer my questions. Most importantly, she is kind.”

Leadership and Team Contribution

Beyond her direct caregiving role, Ramona is an active contributor to Gracewell’s Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) and Safety Committee. She has played an instrumental role in initiatives aimed at improving resident hydration and enhancing call light response times. Her thoughtful input has also helped clarify resident schedules for staff, allowing for more proactive and efficient care delivery.

Team members describe Ramona as a true team player—someone who steps in during busy shifts, offers support without hesitation, and provides constructive feedback that elevates the entire team. Her commitment to continuous improvement and her genuine passion for caregiving have made a lasting impact on both residents and staff.

For her outstanding skills, steadfast dedication, and inspiring influence, Ramona Chajon exemplifies the very best in caregiving. Gracewell and the broader community celebrate her well-deserved recognition as Caregiver of the Year.
