What is Assisted Living?
Assisted Living is a special combination of housing and personalized services designed for older adults who may require some help with Activities of Daily Living, but who do not need skilled nursing care. The goal is to promote maximum independence, freedom of choice, privacy and dignity. Professional assistance by a trained staff is tailored to each individual's needs. Staff is available 24 hours a day.
How do I know if Assisted Living is right for me?
If you are an older adult who is either looking for security, a maintenance free lifestyle, or can no longer maintain a totally independent lifestyle but do not need the intensive level of care associated with nursing homes, Assisted Living may be the right choice for you.
How much does Assisted Living cost?
Cost of Assisted Living varies depending on the residence and level of care required. Many times assisted living is more cost effective than the nursing facility. At Silveridge, the basic monthly fee includes three meals a day, snacks and beverages available at all hours, some personal and/or nursing care assistance, transportation to medical appointments in town, nurses on location 7 days a week, large apartments, all utilities (except phone) including satellite TV and wireless internet, weekly linens changes, and recreational activities.
How do I pay for Assisted Living?
Expenses are either paid for privately or through a 3rd party source such as Long Term Care insurance. A representative from Eventide can help you with your financial plan and show you how affordable it can be. VA benefits may also be available.
What VA benefits may be available to me in assisted living?
Veterans' Benefits - What is Aid and Attendance?
What is Aid and Attendance? Aid and attendance is an additional amount available to eligible veterans and dependents that are entitled to VA pension or VA compensation. A VA compensation or pension benefit is awarded to a veteran determined to be in need of regular aid and attendance of another person to perform basic functions of everyday life. This can include help with medications, supervision, ability to benefit from healthy well-balanced meals and so forth. Who is eligible for Aid and Attendance? A veteran, dependent spouse, or surviving spouse who is determined to be in need of regular aid and attendance of another person, may be entitled to higher income limitations or additional benefits, depending on the type of benefit received. Veteran must have served 90 days with an honorable discharge and be a resident of Iowa for 30 days.
Veterans' Benefits - What benefits can I receive?
- Veteran can receive a maximum of $1644.00/month.
- Veteran and dependent (wife) can receive a maximum of $1949.00/month.
- Widow of veteran can receive a maximum of $1056.00/month.
Veterans' Benefits - What income requirements are applied for general eligibility?
- $80,000 or less of assets for veteran and dependent
- $80,000 or less of assets for individual veteran or individual widow
- Does not include house or car

Veterans' Benefits - How do I apply?
Please contact the Crawford County Veterans' Service Officer Louise Galbraith at 712-263-2270 or at 1220 Broadway in Denison, Iowa. She can assist you with initial paperwork and pre-qualification.
What are the visiting hours at Silveridge?
There are no specific visiting hours. Families and friends are encouraged to visit anytime and participate in activities. Visiting hours would only be limited if infringing upon the rights of other residents. We do have a number of different rooms available where families and visitors can meet privately.
Is food available at all times?
Yes, 3 meals a day are served plus snacks and beverages are available 24 hours a day.
Can residents do his/her own laundry?
Yes, we have laundry rooms available for their resident's use. At Silveridge, weekly laundry of linens is included in the monthly fee and common area laundry facilities are available.
What is respite care?
Respite care is a short term arrangement that allows caregivers time away from their daily tasks. Care taking is a 24/7 job for many and sometimes caregivers need time away for things like appointments, vacations, or just a much needed break. Silveridge offer respite care when space is available. Caregivers can rest assured knowing that their loved ones are being cared for in a warm, homelike environment.
What makes Silveridge different from other Assisted Living Facilities?
Silveridge offers unmatched value for assisted living in the area. We provide a residential, comfortable, more home-like atmosphere. We have spacious apartments that a suitable for a couple. In most cases, the monthly rates at Silverdige will cover most of one's cost of living. With so many services covered in the monthly fee, many residents find that the cost of buying these services, while remaining in their own home is higher than the cost of living at Silveridge. You will find our staff is the biggest asset of Silveridge. Silveridge is part of a Continuum of Care community sharing a campus with Eventide, Heritage Heights and Realife Cooperative.
How do I know if a Retirement Residence is for me?
Some considerations to help you determine if moving to a retirement residence is for you would be:
- You are age 62 or older - or handicapped;
- You want to remain independent;
- Emergency medical help is important to you;
- You would enjoy the opportunity to meet new people with similar interests;
- You would enjoy having planned social and recreational activities available to you;
- You would enjoy having a fitness room for your use;
- You would welcome having someone else take care of outdoor chores and maintenance;
- You would enjoy a cost effective place to live.
What does it mean to live in a Life Plan Community?
Life shows that the Eventide campus is about so much more than care: We are about living life to the fullest. Plan captures the unique 'safety net' advantages that CCRC's offer through advanced healthcare services. A Life Plan Community allows planning and living to merge. Having a plan in place allows for living life to the fullest.
Will Medicare pay for my stay at a nursing home?
Medicare will pay for your stay at Eventide if you meet the Medicare requirements. First you must have had a minimum of 3 consecutive nights of acute care in a hospital in the past 30 days. At the time of admission to Eventide, you must also need care that is considered a Medicare skilled qualifier. Medicare covers 100% of the first 20 days you are eligible, after that time they cover 80% If you have supplement insurance, it may cover the remaining 20%. Medicare coverage in the nursing home is limited and varies depending on each individual situation. The maximum coverage is 100 days, but the average is generally 60 days. Families need to be aware if they have purchased a Medicare replacement plan they do not have Medicare benefits. Coverage will then vary depending on what insurance they have.
At Eventide Lutheran Home, do residents have to get up in the morning or go to bed at any certain times? What activities are provided?
Residents are encouraged and assisted to set up their own schedule and routine.
We have 3 activity staff members and a full activity calendar. Activities are provided throughout the day and with special evening and weekend events. Personalized activities are available based on the residents needs and preferences. All religious denominations are represented and welcomed.
Is transportation provided to medical appointments?
Eventide and Silveridge do provide transportation to medical appointments in town, special arrangements will be made for out of town appointments. Eventide Residents are also welcome to use our bus for other needs in town during business hours, as bus is available. Bus is also available on weekends for a small charge.
Is there any privacy in nursing homes?
Nursing homes are a balance of providing adequate supervision and promoting much deserved privacy for its residents. Common areas are open while resident's rooms offer more privacy. We currently have 48 private resident rooms with the remaining being semi-private rooms. At Eventide, we strive to provide exceptional care to our residents in a homelike environment while upholding the family philosophy of accomplishing this through maintaining values of privacy, choice, dignity, individuality and independence.
What is your Nurse staffing ratio?
This ratio is dependent upon many variables, including the amount of care that is required for the residents in a particular neighborhood. In comparing with other facilities throughout the state, Eventide continues to show a very high staffing ratio.
What types of activities do you offer?
Eventide has a full-time, experienced Certified Activities Director who schedules activities for multiple levels of resident ability that are interesting and creative. We take pride in our activities programs for their innovation and commitment to providing quality, meaningful daily and special activities for our residents. Enhancing the quality of life and well being of our residents is our activity department's first priority. In addition to our Director, we also have two Activity Assistants in our program.
Do you offer transportation?
Yes, we do routine bus trips for fun outings. Our bus is available for resident use Monday through Friday during regular business hours for medical and personal appointments. The bus is available on weekends and evening hours for a small charge.
What types of therapy do you provide?
Eventide is proud to partner with Rehab Care to provide therapy on the Eventide campus. Therapy is provided by experienced, licensed Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists.
Do you offer food preferences at meals?
Upon admission, each resident meets with the dietary director to plan an individualized balanced diet taking into consideration each residents likes and dislikes and dietary needs. In addition to the cook's choice, alternates are always available. We take immense pride in providing meals that are both delicious and nutritious. Our dietary manager is always available to discuss any dietary concerns.
Are there nurses on duty 24 hours a day?
Yes, there are nurses on duty 24 hours a day at Eventide.
Will my insurance pay for services?
How much a 3rd party payor will contribute towards skilled nursing care depends on the individual policy coverage guidelines. Many policies have an elimination period, which means you would have to live in the nursing home for a period of time and pay privately before they would start to pay benefits. These elimination periods are usually vary from 30 to 90 days. Most policies also require you to meet some physical and / or cognitive requirement in order to receive payment. Our office manager would be happy to sit down with you to help you assess your particular situation.
Can we bring in our own belongings to Eventide and what do you provide?
Each room is furnished with a bed, dresser and night stand. We also have a number of recliners and TVs which you are welcome to use. We encourage personal items so you will feel at home. Space may be limited and we must ensure your safety.
