COVID-19 Notification 12.11.20

Receiving a vaccination is one of the most effective ways for individuals to protect themselves and those around them. Development of a COVID-19 vaccination has been on a fast-track since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020. The availability of a vaccine to fight against COVID-19 is getting very close. For those working or living in our skilled nursing facility, also known as Eventide Lutheran Home or “the nursing home,” the Pfizer vaccine is tentatively scheduled to be available in the upcoming weeks.

Key Dates on Pfizer Vaccine Approval Process:
  • Thursday, December 10 – FDA Advisory Committee met to discuss the data from the trials and application and gave Pfizer vaccine approval
  • Friday, December 11 – CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) Meeting
  • Saturday, December 12 – Possible Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) approval from the FDA
  • Sunday, December 13 – CDC – ACIP Meeting and possible vote on additional recommendations surrounding vaccine EUA

Assuming the above takes place, December 28th will be the first distribution to skilled nursing facilities across Iowa. Eventide has signed up with the Federal Pharmacy Partnership Program, and Walgreens has been selected to administer the early vaccines on campus. This Pharmacy Partnership for Long Term Care Program provides end-to-end management of the COVID-19 vaccination process, including cold chain management, on-site vaccinations, and fulfillment of reporting requirements; to facilitate safe vaccination of this patient population, while reducing burden on long term care facilities and jurisdictional health departments.

We are expected to have 1-2 weeks’ notice of our on-site clinic date. This will allow time for us to have consent forms signed and provide further education about the vaccine. We are unable to have consent forms signed until approval of the EUA. There is a 21-day interval between dose #1 and dose #2 with full immunity expected by day 28.  There will be three visits over approximately two months to administer both doses of the vaccine and to vaccinate any new residents and staff.  After this timeframe, the local providers will be able to assist with vaccinations as more become available. We expect the vaccine to be available to the assisted living in January.

Please note if you have had COVID-19 previously, you are still encouraged to get the vaccination and some age restrictions may apply. There is no cost to anyone who takes the vaccination. Insurance will be billed if applicable, and there will be no co-pay or out of pocket costs. Those without insurance will be able to have the vaccine at no cost.

Please know that we are taking all actions we can to prevent the risk of further transmission of COVID-19. All of our team members are wearing proper PPE, we are testing nursing facility team members at least twice a week. We are not allowing team members to work with any new onset of symptoms, and we are paying employees to stay home if they test positive.

We continue screening all who enter the facility, cleaning and disinfecting frequently, utilizing telehealth, limiting visitors, educating team members etc.
